Your guide will meet you in front of Prague Castle District. After getting a basic overview of its history and existence, skip the ticket line and explore St. Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St. George's Basilica and the Golden Lane at your own pace! Prague Castle is the official seat of the President of the Czech Republic and has always been one of the important centers of political and ecclesiastical power in Europe. The monumental residence of the Czech monarchs and Holy Roman Emperors is also one of the world's famous castles, and its large-scale combination of palaces, churches and other buildings of different ages and architectural styles makes it the most visited monument in the world. At Prague Castle, your guide will give you a brief introduction to the history and existence of the castle and provide further advice for your personal visit. After your questions have been answered, you will be provided with tickets so that you can explore the interior of the castle at your own pace. First, you can visit St. Vitus Cathedral, a masterpiece of European Gothic architecture. The traditional place for the coronation of the Czech royal family has also become the burial place of many Czech dukes, kings and even the Habsburg Emperor. Visit the jewel-adorned St. Wenceslas Church, where the country's patron saint is buried and a door with seven locks leads to the Crown Room, where the Czech crown jewels are kept to this day. You will be dazzled by the Art Nouveau stained glass windows by Alfons Mucha and the huge silver tomb of Saint John of Nepomuch. On your way to the Old Royal Palace, don’t forget to marvel at the beauty of the Last Judgment mosaic from the 1370s above the south entrance of the cathedral. Stand under the huge vaults of Vladislav Hall in this medieval palace, where equestrian competitions, later coronation banquets, and now presidential inaugurations were held. Next, visit the Cathedral of St. George, the oldest surviving church in the castle, where you can admire Romanesque architecture from the 1140s. Here, Benedictine nuns have prayed seven times a day for more than 800 years. Golden Lane This alley was named after the goldsmiths who later moved here, and in the early 20th century it attracted many artists like Franz Kafka, who even found a brief retreat here. Please note that on special occasions (such as state visits) parts of the castle may be closed to visitors. St. Vitus Cathedral is closed regularly every Sunday morning (church services), and the Old Royal Palace is closed for a few days around October 28 (state awards ceremonies). Indoor opening hours are 9:00–17:00 in summer (April to October) and 9:00–16:00 in winter (November to March). Your ticket is valid for two days and gives you one entry to each of the four attractions.
